Find The Words: How to start a message when you haven’t spoken in a while

How to start a message when you haven’t spoken in a while

Life can just get SO busy sometimes, can’t it? Between work, family, and the whirlwind of daily routines, occasionally we find ourselves drifting apart from friends and loved ones.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’ve worked with our partners CALM - Campaign Against Living Miserably - to create some blog posts that will help provide some practical advice to help you find the words, whatever the situation. And, if you’re ever struggling, head to thecalmzone.net where you’ll find loads of tools and resources packed with practical advice to make talking and managing mental health easier.

If you're looking to rekindle that friendship, a simple card can be the perfect way to break the ice and start a conversation. Unsure of what to say? Don't worry, we've got you covered. Here are some suggestions to help you reconnect:

Image of three greetings cards that read: 'Sentimental Stuff Inside', 'I'm Just Sending This Card Because You're a Great Human. That's It' and 'You've Got This'

Just say ‘hi!’

Kick things off with a friendly "hello" and let them know you've been thinking about them. A simple, "Hi there! It's been a while, hasn't it?" can set the tone for a warm and genuine conversation.

Mention the gap

Address the elephant in the room by acknowledging the time that has passed since your last chat. A light-hearted, "I can't believe it's been X since we last caught up!" can break the ice and open the door to reconnecting.

Share a memory

Reminiscing about a memory you share could bring back some nostalgia. Whether it's recalling a funny moment or talking about an adventure you shared, bringing up a memory can help rekindle the connection between you.

Express genuine interest

Show them that you care by asking about their life and what they've been up to since you last spoke. A sincere, "I've been wondering how you've been doing lately. What's new in your world?" can demonstrate your genuine interest in their well-being.

Offer an invitation

Extend an invitation to catch up in person or over a call to continue the conversation. Whether it's grabbing coffee, going for a walk, or scheduling a Facetime, extending an invitation shows that you're eager to reconnect and spend time together.

Remember, the most important thing is to be genuine in your message. Whether you're reaching out to an old friend, a family member, or a colleague, a thoughtful card can be the perfect way to reignite the spark of connection and strengthen your bond.

Happy reconnecting!
