Find The Words: What to say in a card when someone’s having a sh*t time

What to say in a card when someone’s having a sh*t time

Life's roller coaster isn't always filled with highs. Sometimes, we find ourselves navigating through some really challenging moments. During these times, the support and care of loved ones can make all the difference. Sending a heartfelt card is a beautiful way to remind someone that they're not alone, that brighter days are ahead, and that you're there to walk alongside them, every step of the way.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’ve worked with our partners CALM - Campaign Against Living Miserably - to create some blog posts that will help provide some practical advice to help you find the words, whatever the situation. And, if you’re ever struggling, head to thecalmzone.net where you’ll find loads of tools and resources packed with practical advice to make talking and managing mental health easier.

So, what do you write in a card when someone has been having a tough time? How do you get across your empathy, support, and encouragement in just a few words? Here are some ideas to help you craft a message that speaks volumes:

Acknowledge their struggle

Start by acknowledging what they're going through. A simple, "I know things have been really tough for you lately," can let them know that you see their pain and that you're there to offer support, without judgement.

Offer your support

Reassure them that you're there for them, no matter what. A heartfelt, "I'm here for you, through the ups and downs," can provide comfort and reassurance during difficult times.

Share words of encouragement

Offer words of encouragement to uplift their spirits. Whether it's, "You're stronger than you know," or "We’ll be laughing about this in no time," a message of hope can remind them that they have the strength to overcome any challenge.

Remind them of their strengths

Sometimes it's easy to forget our own strength and resilience. Remind your loved one of their inner strength with words like, "I admire your courage and resilience," or "You've overcome so much already, and I know you'll get through this."

Express your love and care

Let them know how much they mean to you and how deeply you care about their well-being. A simple, "Sending you love and strength," or "You're always in my thoughts," can convey your affection and support.

Offer practical help

If you're able to offer practical support, don't hesitate to mention it. Whether it's running errands, cooking a meal, or simply lending a listening ear, your offer of help can make a world of difference.

End on a positive note

Close your message with a positive sentiment to leave them feeling uplifted. A hopeful, "Brighter days are ahead," or "I believe in you," can leave a lasting impact and remind them that there's always hope, even in the darkest of times.

Remember, it's not about finding the perfect words, it's about expressing your genuine care and support. Whether your message is short and sweet or long and heartfelt, what matters most is that it comes from the heart.

So, take a moment to reach out to someone who's going through a tough time, and let them know that they're not alone. Your words of love and encouragement can be the beacon of light they need to navigate through the storm.
